a #dearme poetry

Because I know that 16-year old me will not appreciate a narrative advice from a 23-year old,

I wrote a poem that she’ll most likely pretend to brush off (but go back to when the lights are off).

So #dearme at 16,
you dearme copy

monthly movie bucketlist

The couch potato in me celebrates the metaphorical Netflix, I say metaphorical because it’s a first world perk, where I could be seated on the sofa or laying on my comfy bed  with jammies on and a pepperoni pizza while watching 8 movies of Harry Potter in succession (maybe even Woman in Black to soothe my feels).

Yes, I’m a binge watcher.

Whether you’re just like me or prefer the theater environment where the lights are dim and the screen is massive, most of us are movie buffs especially with the booming culture of film adaptation of books, reboots of well-loved movies like Spiderman and sequels or prequels of fandom hits like Star Wars. To be honest, I wasn’t always adept at finding THE best movies. I had to consciously google reviews and binge watch movie trailers. I’ve always wished there were suggestion blogs where I could go and just pick out what I wanna watch. After working for movie review blogs, I thought hey maybe I can do trailer reviews for my own blog if I ever have one.

So here’s 2015 me, following up on a 2013 promise.

Here are a few trailers of movies either out now, have been out for a few months or are yet to be released that I thought might be good to share. As we have different tastes in movies, I’ve tried to keep this as diverse as possible but you have to forgive the geek in me, it always makes an appearance.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

I don’t wanna reveal too much for the non-comic book readers but this much-awaited installment of the Avengers franchise centers on an artificial intelligence technology originally developed by Tony Stark, Ultron, which turned evil and is now hellbent on destroying our protagonists and the world along with it. You’ll see the return of our favorite heroes like Thor, Captain America, Ironman, the Hulk and Black Widow, whose story btw we’ll get glimpses of on this film.

DUFF

This is the movie adaptaion of Kody Keplinger’s coming-of-age teen fiction book with the same name.

Like most high school set stories, it underlines the ‘LABEL’ culture where jocks and mean girls are hot and worshiped while the nerds are scavenging scraps of a social life at the bottom. This movie though will introduce a new label, DUFF or a designated ugly, fat friend who doesn’t necessarily have to be ugly or fat (not that I believe either adjective should exist in anyone’s vocabulary) but according to high school norms is the least attractive. How superficial right? Welcome to high school!

It chronicles our DUFF’s journey to being un-DUFFed all the while discovering herself and hopefully a new romance.

TRUE STORY

It’s like seeing Jonah Hill grow up right before my eyes, from his usual funny role in 21 Jump Street to the Oscar nominated Wolf of Wall Street to another movie heavy weight that would haunt you with so many questions after seeing a 2 minute trailer. It’s about this toxic relationship between a disgraced journalist, Michael Finkel and an FBI Most Wanted List murderer, Christian Longo.

If the plot isn’t enough to convince you to go see it, go because it’s James Franco and it’s always a thrill seeing him on screen (or maybe that’s just me). Kidding aside, this is one of the movies I’m looking forward to the most. It has my 3 favorites: a good plot, good actors and truth- as it’s based on a real life story.

PITCH PERFECT 2

The Barden Bellas are back for more covers and laughs. It’s a been a few years since they first popularized the Cups Song and a lot of people are still covering it so it’s safe to say that expectations are high especially with Hollywood being extremely supportive of movie musicals these days. If the trailer’s any tell though, this movie’s gonna deliver. With the promise of world competitions and more romance for Jesse and Beca, I’m definitely lining up for this.

THE AGE OF ADALINE

Blake Lively plays Adaline Bowman who has miraculously remained 29 years old for nearly eight decades after an accident that should have been deadly but became magical instead. Although immortality is the gift of a lifetime to most, the story shows its pitfalls like never allowing yourself to get close to anyone lest they discover your secret or watching the people you live for die.

I’ve learned to expect a lot of negativity when it comes to immortality movies especially those premised on mystic logic but I find the plot thrilling enough to recommend to you guys. Give it a chance and tell me what you think.

So that’s it for my movie recommendations. If you go watch any of the movies, tell me how it does on your movie standards. I’d love to hear them.

mood playlist: 6 am to 1 am

I’ve been listening to a lot of playlists lately mostly those put together by avid fans for books or movies without OSTs on http://8tracks.com/. If you’re not familiar with the site but you’re open and willing to try new songs that are more obscure or thematic, then I suggest you try and explore it and see if you might like how they present music. I know I do.

That actually got me to thinking about writing a playlist entry instead of just one song. Playlists are often more dynamic and revealing. If you look into what I listen to in day, you’ll probably see that I’m not all indie music. Actually, I’ve been listening to a lot of mainstream singers these days and they’re not all corporate sell outs like most other indie music bloggers paint them to be. I should know, I used to be one of them. I get the drift though, some of them compromise on the art to be more relatable. I guess that’s a choice but I don’t think we should generalize all mainstream music to be bad or all indie music to be rough or unpolished. Give all sorts of music a chance. Give this playlist a chance.

am i wrong by nico & vinz: a lively pick-me-up song that also doubles as my alarm

budapest by george ezra: still lively enough but it soothes the upcoming that I almost always have from waking up too early and sleeping too late (Bad lifestyle choices, I know. I’m working on it.) the lyrics are adorable by the way.

sugar by maroon 5: is the song i perform for my fans in the shower (Don’t act like you never do it.)

take me to church by hozier: i can’t listen to anything too upbeat because i start bobbing my head up and down, bad idea for the commute. although i still opt for the louder songs with really good lyrics so i can focus on it instead of the honking and the endless congestion.

So that’s my day to night playlist. I obviously listen to a lot of other songs (which is probably not very good for my eardrums), these are just the more mainstream ones that I’ve been going back to for the last few months for some reason. Tell me what you guys think and if you have any song suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

song pick of the week: Fireproof by One Direction

I think I need a round of applause and congratulations for stepping out of my alternative and indie music comfort zone and welcoming more mainstream sounds. I’m definitely not sorry. I’ve been listening to One Direction for awhile now, actually since they started and I’ll be dead honest with you I think they have the pipes but most their carrier songs are too poppy for my taste. I’m sure it has a demo thus they now have one of the biggest, if not the biggest fanbase in the music industry.

Give them some credit you guys, they made it and they have songs that will really melt your heart. You just have to take your time and listen. These fangirls, me included, have taste too. They may scream for the good looks that is the 5 members of One Direction but they have enough sense TO ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THE MUSIC. If you ever decide to listen to them, which I highly recommend, start with Taken, Strong, Little Things, Summer Love, Don’t Forget Where You Belong and Happily, they’re my personal favorites.

If you’ll indulge me some more then listen to Fireproof from their album Four. Trust me it’s an absolutely different sound from the expected mainstream tunes you hear these days. It’s a breath of fresh air actually.

Fireproof by One Direction

I think I’m gonna lose my mind,
Something deep inside me, I can’t give up,
I think I’m gonna lose my mind,
I’ll roll and I’ll roll ’till I’m out of luck, yeah, I’ll roll and I’ll roll ’till I’m out of luck,

I’m feeling something deep in inside,
Hotter than jet stream burning up,
I got a feeling deep inside,
It’s taking, it’s taking all I got, yeah, it’s taking, it’s taking all I got,

Cause nobody knows you, baby, the way I do,
And nobody loves you, baby, the way I do,
It’s been so long, it’s been so long, maybe we’re fireproof,
Cause nobody saves me, baby, the way you do.

I think I’m gonna win this time,
Riding on the wind and i wont give up,
I think I’m gonna win this time,
I’ll roll and I’ll roll, ’till I change my luck, yeah, I’ll roll and I’ll roll, ’till I change my luck,

Cause nobody knows you, baby, the way I do,
And nobody loves you, baby, the way I do,
It’s been so long, it’s been so long, we must be fireproof,
Cause nobody saves me, baby, the way you do,

Cause nobody knows you, baby, the way I do,
And nobody loves you, baby, the way I do,
It’s been so long, it’s been so long, maybe we’re fireproof,
Cause nobody saves me, baby, the way you do.

things i wanna do with you

or in the words of the romantic, the couple bucket list.

I’ve had series of posts about real heavy social issues like bullying, social disorder and depression the past few weeks and I thought now’s the time to set a lighter tone. After all this is passport to rainbows. It should have different colors, not always blues and indigos. Here’s your touch of something sunny yellow and love-filled red.

Hold your horses people. My typography is far from perfect but I thought my effort to make something as romantic and cheesy is enough to win you over. You know how much I suck at that. So here’s my little attempt to join the bandwagon of couples with their heart-filled eyes and creative gestures.

song pick of the week: Shake It Off by Taylor Swift

Okay before people start stoning me to death demanding I retract this let me first say that this in an achievement since this is the first song pick I made that isn’t by Ed or another band because I was honestly contemplating picking Tenerife Sea- a great song btw but I thought a change in genre will be fun. Let me clarify as well, I actually LOVE Taylor’s songs. It may not be as obvious because I clearly have a more alternative/ rock/ indie taste in music but honestly this girl can write one hell of song- she’s got 5 albums to prove it.

Most people think that she only writes bitter tribute songs that curse her exes to the depths of Tartarus, mostly because of the over-romanticized narratives she gets from the media but really she has other songs which are on a whole different plane- songs like The Lucky One, Brought Up That Way and Mean. Plus you gotta admit, her break up songs can be good metaphors for coping in life if you let it.

A few hours ago she just released a music video for her upcoming album, to be released this October 27, called 1989 after her birth year.

Taylor announced that her new album is called 1989 — after her birth year — and will be out Oct. 27.

I’m gonna let the song speak for its self because I do think the message is loud and clear so without much ranting here’s Shake It Off by Taylor Swift.

Shake It Off

by Taylor Swift

I stay up too late
Got nothing in my brain
That’s what people say
That’s what people say
I go on too many dates
But I can’t make them stay
At least that’s what people say
That’s what people say
But I keep cruising
Can’t stop, won’t stop moving
It’s like I got this music
In my mind, saying it’s gonna be alright
Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off
Heart break is gonna break, break, break
And I think it’s gonna fake, fake, fake
Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off, Shake it off

I never miss a beat
I’m lighting up my feet
And that’s what they don’t see
That’s what they don’t see
I’m dancing on my own
I make the moves as I go
And that’s what they don’t know
That’s what they don’t know
But I keep cruising
Can’t stop, won’t stop moving
It’s like I got this music
In my mind, saying it’s gonna be alright
Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off
Heart break is gonna break, break, break
And I think it’s gonna fake, fake, fake
Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off, Shake it off

Hey, hey, hey
Just think while you been getting down and out about the liars
And the dirty dirty cheats of the world
You could have been getting down to this sick beat

Let’s end this entry with her words  during the live stream on Yahoo this morning.

“Life itself and who people actually are can be greatly reflected in how they dance,” Taylor told the audience.

“I’m not talking about how good you are, I mean your willingness to dance.”

song pick of the week: ONE by Ed Sheeran

Again…

I know. Again.

Please please understand that I’ve been really racking my brain thinking of another song I like more than One this week but there just isn’t one despite the fact the I downloaded probably 30 songs already. I’ve had it on replay since last Sunday afternoon and I’ve been listening to it everywhere. I even pissed my sister off when we went shopping this week as I was too engrossed with the song I didn’t notice she’s been going on for a few minutes (not very wise by the way).

I can’t really explain why I like it technically as I’ve already confessed I’m not a pro but I love the honesty of it. It reaches out to you and makes you feel one of two things: you wrote it or someone wrote it for you. My friend says it reminds him of a classic screw-up, find purpose and lives a better life for and with someone story. What do you guys think?

I know one thing’s for sure, Ed you are a bloody GENIUS!

ONE

by Ed Sheeran

Tell me that you turned down the man
Who asked for your hand
‘Cause you’re waiting for me
And I know, you’re gonna be away a while
But I’ve got no plans at all to leave

And would you take away my hopes and dreams and just stay with me?

All my senses come to life
While I’m stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I’ll never leave again
‘Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
[Regular version:] Just promise me, you’ll never leave again
[Acoustic version:] Just promise me, you’ll always be a friend
‘Cause you are the only one

Take my hand and my
Heart and soul, I will
Only have these eyes for you
And you know, everything changes but
We’ll be strangers if we see this through
You could stay within these walls and bleed
Or just stay with me
Oh lord, now

All my senses come to life
While I’m stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I’ll never leave again
‘Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you’ll always be a friend
‘Cause you are the only one

I’m stumbling off drunk, getting myself lost
I am so gone, so tell me the way home
I listen to sad songs, singing about love
And where it goes wrong

All my senses come to life
While I’m stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I’ll never leave again
‘Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you’ll always be a friend
‘Cause you are the only one
